Truths and Myths About SEO

So what signs do you need to look for when deciding what techniques you want to use?

TRUTHS:

Any good SEO technique will always include manipulation of your HTML text code. A reference to keyword searching, Meta tags, Title tags, and Format is always a good sign.

Your keywords are very important for the search ability of your website and also help the search engines figure out how to index/crawl your site. Using the proper keywords in your Meta tags and title tags also aids in this process. Formats such as HTML5/XHTML allow your website to become more accessible to mobile devices. Seeing as though people are using desktop computer less and less the use of these formats will ensure that your site is user friendly.

If prompted to link your website to your social networking accounts I would not worry, this is a good thing.

Social Media has now become the most popular element of the internet and can generate loads of traffic to your website. 50% of the world's population is under the age of 30 and 96% of them has some sort of social networking account. This means that social interaction with your customer is key in today's market.

Techniques that include submitting articles linking to your website are also a sure fire way to successfully practice SEO.

People love information. Article writing is a perfect way for you to indirectly connect with your audience and to express your creativity. Creating good content, informative, and interesting articles will open a door of opportunity you never would have thought existed.

Requesting permission to post your URL to relevant websites, forums, and blogs is another great weapon to use in your arsenal.

This is very important to the search engines. You have to get along with the other web owners in order to rank well. It's sort of like a popularity contest. Just asking to post links seem easy enough right? This can be somewhat challenging at times because in order for your links to be effective they have to be posted to relevant/related sites. Some owners scurry away from the idea of competition and will refuse your requests every time. This is when you should figure out what would be a good sub category for your website, then make your inquiries. Also Link swaps (I'll post your link if you post mine) can come in handy. You can never have too many back links to your site so building them should always be an ongoing practice.

MYTHS:

"All Paid SEO package services are spammers and scammers so never buy traffic!"

This is far from the truth. Although there are a lot of services out there that do practice this type of "SEO Marketing," a lot of them have been taken down due to search engines such as Google cracking down on them. Paid traffic can be a great way for you to get those extra sales with no work on your end. However there are ways to tell if you should stay away. Never purchase a package prior to contacting the service provider directly. Always inquire about the exact methods that would be used. That way you can cover yourself if a search engine determines that you are using "other than honorable" tactics to drive traffic. Remember it is always ok to pay someone to do your work for you. Just make sure you do your research first.

"If your website is indexed you are golden. You don't have to do anything else!"

Really; I don't think so. Getting indexed just means that the particular search engine knows you exist. You won't get any special privileges for this and it just mean that you will have to work even harder to compete with the rest of indexed sites. Don't be fooled by those websites promising to get you indexed quicker, save your money. The search engines will do it in its own time. Patience is a must.

"Add as many keywords as you can think of and add them to your HTML files!"

Wrong! The purpose of doing an extensive keyword search is to find keywords relevant to your site that have low competition and unique. Adding a gang of keywords to your website is the quickest way to get shut down due to spam. You never want to over do it. It takes time, research and a little creativity. 3-4 one-word or two-word phases should do the trick.

" Analyzing your website will fix all!"

Site analysis can be a helpful tool to use in order to identify errors and suggestions in relation to your HTML code. There are plenty of trusted free webmaster tools you can use to check on your websites. Be very cautious of sites that want you to download software or make any sign ups.

I know this can be a lot to take in for those of you who are trying to do this on your own. Remember I said that there is nothing wrong with paying someone else to do it for you, as long as you know its ok.
