Starting Local in the Tech Industry

As more and more Millenials are graduating from college and having trouble finding employment, the tech industry is looking like it may step up as the top employer of these types of workers. Since the turn of the Millenium, business in the tech industry has boomed, particularly in sectors involving the Internet and mobile technology. These types of businesses are perfect for new college graduates because they require familiarity with technology and a creative drive, which are both things that many of today's college grads possess.
However, many young 20-somethings are wondering how to find and apply for these jobs in the best way possible. There is always the chicken and the egg issue when it comes to snagging a good job straight out of college: most tech jobs require a decent amount of experience, but in order to get this kind of experience, one first needs a job. Thus, trying to find a job in the tech industry can be quite frustrating for recent college grads.
The one thing I have found to remain true even as more and more young adults are looking for jobs is that getting a job with a small local tech firm is much easier than aiming for larger, global companies like Google or Facebook. For instance, if you check out the job classifieds in your city (specifically in the technology section), you'll likely find software development firms, marketing agencies, and other businesses in the tech industry that are looking for fresh, young minds. Although a job with a local firm might not seem as glamorous or pay as much as a job with a bigger firm, you'll start gaining that experience you need to run with the big guys.
Like most jobs, you may start off doing work that you don't completely enjoy, but at least you've landed in the general industry you want to be in. For instance, you might be doing minor photo editing or proof reading instead of holding the title of head designer or senior copywriter, but hold out long enough and you'll likely get where you want to be.
Starting out as a young college grad is all about making connections and proving yourself in the world, and this is definitely true in the tech industry. One minute you may be working for a start up iPad POS app developer, and the next thing you know you're on the board of a multi-million dollar company. That's one of the beautiful and exciting things about the tech industry - we never know where it's headed next.
ConnectBusiness and InspireSmart are hiring in the Denver area. If you're looking for a job in the tech industry and don't mind a fast-paced, fun work environment, visit http://www.inspiresmart.com for more info.
